CCAT Matrices: Row, Column & Pattern-Solving Methods

Matrix questions arrange figures in a grid and ask which option belongs in the missing cell.

The rule may operate:

  • across each row;
  • down each column;
  • in both directions;
  • through count changes;
  • through movement or rotation;
  • through addition, subtraction, or superposition of features.

Criteria officially reports Spatial Reasoning as a CCAT ability area. It does not guarantee one fixed number of matrix questions.

Scope and Official Context

This page focuses on row-and-column matrix rules. The examples are independent practice and do not reproduce secure Criteria items or establish a fixed live-test matrix allocation.

Criteria’s current candidate guidance confirms 50 questions in 15 minutes and three broad question kinds: verbal, math and logic, and spatial reasoning. Criteria does not publish one permanent narrow subtype allocation for every live event.

Start With the Grid Structure

Before analyzing shapes, identify:

  • the number of rows and columns;
  • the missing cell;
  • whether two complete rows or columns are available;
  • which direction provides the strongest evidence.

A 3×3 matrix often gives two completed examples of the same rule.

Row-Cycling Pattern

Each row shifts the shapes one position left.

Answer: Square.

The columns confirm the same cycle.

Column-Cycling Pattern

Count Addition

Check another completed row before accepting addition.

Count Subtraction

8 - 5 = 3

Answer: 3 elements.

Superposition

Superposition combines features from two cells.

Example description:

  • Cell 1 contains a vertical line.
  • Cell 2 contains a horizontal line.
  • Cell 3 contains both lines as a plus sign.

The rule is:

Cell 1 + Cell 2 = Cell 3

In a missing row, combine the visible features in the same way.

Cancellation or XOR-Style Combination

Sometimes repeated features disappear while unique features remain.

Example:

  • Cell 1 contains a circle and square.
  • Cell 2 contains a square and triangle.
  • Cell 3 contains a circle and triangle.

The shared square cancels.

Do not label this as an official CCAT rule. It is a useful independent matrix-practice pattern.

Rotation Across Rows

Example:

Movement Across Positions

Suppose each cell contains a dot in one corner.

Across each row, the dot moves:

top-left → top-right → bottom-right

If the third row begins bottom-left, then top-left, the missing position may be top-right according to the same movement.

Track position separately from shape or shading.

Shading Cycles

Example:

The fill states cycle.

Answer: striped.

Describe fill states in words so the content does not depend only on color.

Multiple Variables

A matrix may change:

  • shape across rows;
  • shading down columns;
  • orientation diagonally.

Create a mental table for each variable.

Do not search for one elaborate rule when two simple independent rules explain the grid.

Check Rows and Columns

A candidate rule should ideally explain:

  • at least two complete rows;
  • or at least two complete columns;
  • and the missing row or column.

If a row rule works but produces an option that violates every column pattern, reconsider it.

Diagonal Relationships

Check diagonals after rows and columns.

Possible diagonal patterns include:

  • the same shape;
  • increasing count;
  • matching fill;
  • constant orientation.

Do not prioritize diagonals merely because they look visually prominent.

Use Answer Choices as Hypotheses

For each remaining option, ask:

  • Does it complete the row rule?
  • Does it complete the column rule?
  • Does it preserve count?
  • Does it match orientation?
  • Does it match shading?

One broken essential rule is enough to eliminate an option.

  • Checking only one row.
  • Ignoring columns.
  • Combining features when the rule is subtraction.
  • Confusing rotation with reflection.
  • Ignoring count because the shapes look complex.
  • Treating shading as color-only information.

  • Overcomplicating a simple cycle.
  • Spending too long after the answer choices already allow elimination.

Timed Strategy
