What Does the CCAT Measure? Verbal, Math, Logic & Spatial Skills
The Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test measures cognitive aptitude: the ability to solve problems, learn new information, apply information, and think critically.
Criteria identifies three official underlying ability areas:
- Verbal Ability;
- Math and Logic;
- Spatial Reasoning.
Together, these abilities contribute to the overall CCAT result.
The standard test contains 50 multiple-choice questions and has a 15-minute time limit.

Scope of This Guide
This page explains the constructs measured by the CCAT: problem solving, learning and applying new information, critical thinking, and the three reported areas of Verbal Ability, Math and Logic, and Spatial Reasoning. It does not catalogue every question subtype or interpret a score.
Use CCAT question types for practice formats, CCAT test format for structure and CCAT score report for results.
CCAT Measurement at a Glance
| Area | What it broadly measures |
|---|---|
| Verbal Ability | Reasoning with words, comprehension, logic, constructive thinking, attention to detail |
| Math and Logic | Reasoning with numbers and numerical concepts, logic, analytical thinking |
| Spatial Reasoning | Visualizing objects, making spatial judgments, solving visual problems |
| Overall result | Combined cognitive aptitude performance under the CCAT format |
Criteria does not publish one fixed narrow question count for every subtype on every live assessment.
Cognitive Aptitude
Cognitive aptitude refers to general capacity for reasoning, learning, and solving unfamiliar problems.
In employment, these abilities can support:
- learning new procedures;
- understanding instructions;
- adapting to unfamiliar information;
- identifying relationships;
- applying rules;
- reasoning through problems.
The CCAT provides one standardized aptitude signal.
It does not provide a complete picture of every skill, behavior, or personal quality relevant to work.
Verbal Ability
Criteria’s information brief describes Verbal Ability in terms of reading and comprehension of words, logic, constructive thinking, and attention to detail.
Independent preparation formats may include:
- synonyms;
- antonyms;
- analogies;
- sentence completion;
- classifications;
- letter sequences;
- short verbal logic.
These formats can test whether the candidate can recognize precise meanings and relationships quickly.
What Verbal Ability Does Not Prove
A verbal result does not by itself prove:
- writing quality in a real workplace;
- presentation skill;
- negotiation skill;
- language fluency in every context;
- professional communication experience.
Use the CCAT verbal-questions guide.
Math and Logic
Criteria combines numerical reasoning and logic within one official ability area called Math and Logic.
Independent practice may separate math and logic for easier study organization.
Numerical formats may include:
- arithmetic;
- fractions and decimals;
- percentages;
- ratios;
- averages;
- simple equations;
- rates;
- number sequences;
- tables.
Logical formats may include:
- categorical deductions;
- conditional reasoning;
- comparison chains;
- ordering;
- rule checking;
- arrangements.
What Math and Logic Does Not Prove
This area does not directly test:
- advanced mathematics;
- accounting standards;
- engineering formulas;
- coding skill;
- financial modeling;
- professional certification knowledge.
Calculators are not permitted during the standard CCAT.
Use the CCAT math guide and logic guide.
Spatial Reasoning
Criteria describes Spatial Reasoning as the ability to visualize objects in physical space, make spatial judgments, and solve problems.
Independent practice formats may include:
- figure sequences;
- matrices;
- rotations;
- reflections;
- movement;
- element-count changes;
- shading changes;
- odd-one-out figures.
A systematic feature checklist can include:
- count;
- shape;
- position;
- direction;
- movement;
- rotation;
- reflection;
- size;
- shading;
- alternation.
What Spatial Reasoning Does Not Prove
A spatial result does not automatically establish:
- mechanical knowledge;
- engineering design skill;
- architectural ability;
- artistic talent;
- job-specific technical competence.
Use the CCAT spatial-reasoning guide.
Is Logic a Fourth Official CCAT Area?
No.
Criteria identifies three underlying areas.
Logic is included within Math and Logic and also appears in aspects of verbal reasoning.
Independent websites may publish four study categories:
- verbal;
- math;
- logic;
- spatial.
This can be useful for preparation, but it does not create four separately timed official sections.
How the Overall Score Is Produced
The raw score is the total number of questions answered correctly out of 50.
Criteria also provides an overall percentile through its norming process.
The official report can include ability-area percentiles for:
- Verbal Ability;
- Math and Logic;
- Spatial Reasoning.
Do not add or average the category percentiles to recreate the overall percentile.
Use the value shown on the official report.
Read the CCAT score-report guide.
Does the CCAT Measure Job Performance?
The CCAT is designed to measure cognitive aptitude, which Criteria uses as a predictor related to workplace learning and performance.
It does not directly observe the candidate performing the job.
An employer may combine it with:
- interviews;
- experience;
- qualifications;
- work samples;
- skills tests;
- personality assessments;
- job-specific exercises.
The assessment should not be presented as the complete hiring decision.
Does the CCAT Measure Personality?
No.
Personality assessments evaluate behavioral tendencies or preferences rather than cognitive aptitude.
Criteria offers separate personality assessments.
Read the CCAT vs. Criteria personality test guide.
Does the CCAT Measure Emotional Intelligence?
Not directly.
Emotional intelligence can involve recognizing and managing emotions, understanding social information, and responding effectively in interpersonal situations.
The standard CCAT focuses on cognitive aptitude.
An employer may use another assessment or interview to evaluate interpersonal constructs.
Does the CCAT Measure Motivation?
No.
A candidate can have strong cognitive aptitude and different levels of motivation for a particular role.
Motivation may be explored through:
- interviews;
- application questions;
- personality or workplace-preference assessments;
- employer-specific exercises.
Does the CCAT Measure Job Knowledge?
No.
The standard CCAT does not test one profession’s technical knowledge.
It does not directly measure:
- coding;
- accounting;
- legal knowledge;
- medical knowledge;
- product knowledge;
- equipment operation;
- software proficiency.
A separate skills assessment may be assigned.
Does the CCAT Measure IQ?
The CCAT measures cognitive aptitude and is related to general cognitive ability.
It is not a clinical or educational IQ test and should not be converted into an unofficial IQ score.
Read Is the CCAT an IQ test?.
Does the CCAT Measure Attention to Detail?
Criteria’s official materials include attention to detail within the description of verbal ability and broader aptitude performance.
The test can require careful attention to:
- instruction words;
- answer-choice differences;
- numerical signs;
- visual counts;
- position changes;
- logical qualifiers.
This is not the same as a dedicated clerical attention-to-detail test.
What the CCAT Does Not Measure Directly
The standard CCAT does not directly provide a complete measure of:
- personality;
- motivation;
- integrity;
- emotional intelligence;
- technical job knowledge;
- professional qualifications;
- experience;
- interview behavior;
- teamwork;
- creativity in every form;
- clinical cognitive functioning.
Employers should use appropriate additional evidence for those areas.
Why the Time Limit Is Part of the Measurement
The CCAT is speeded.
Candidates must reason under a shared 15-minute timer.
This creates demands involving:
- rapid recognition;
- efficient method selection;
- decision-making;
- balancing attempts and accuracy;
- moving on from time traps.
The result reflects performance under these conditions rather than unlimited-time problem-solving alone.
