Build the Essential Facts First

Know common multiplication facts through at least 12 × 12 well enough to avoid repeated reconstruction.

Useful anchor products include:

6 × 7 = 42
7 × 8 = 56
8 × 9 = 72
9 × 12 = 108
11 × 12 = 132
12 × 12 = 144

The objective is fluency, not speed for its own sake.

Decompose Numbers

Example:

38 × 7

Split 38:

30 × 7 = 210
8 × 7 = 56
210 + 56 = 266

Answer: 266.

Use Compensation

Example:

49 × 6

Use 50:

50 × 6 = 300
300 - 6 = 294

Answer: 294.

Double and Halve

Example:

16 × 25

Double 25 and halve 16:

8 × 50 = 4 × 100 = 400

This works because the product stays the same.

Multiply by 5

Multiply by 10 and halve:

68 × 5 = 680 ÷ 2 = 340

Multiply by 9

Multiply by 10 and subtract one group:

34 × 9 = 340 - 34 = 306

For a two-digit number, ordinary decomposition is reliable:

42 × 11 = 42 × 10 + 42 = 420 + 42 = 462

Do not rely on a memorized shortcut when carries make it confusing.

Divide by 5

Double, then divide by 10:

135 ÷ 5 = 270 ÷ 10 = 27

Divide by 25

Multiply by 4, then divide by 100:

700 ÷ 25 = 2800 ÷ 100 = 28

Example:

Recognize:

12 × 12 = 144

For less obvious division, factor both numbers when possible.

Add From Left to Right

Example:

387 + 246
387 + 200 = 587

Average Around a Center

Example:

18, 20, 22, 24

These values are balanced around 21.

Average: 21.

For uneven values, calculate the total normally.

Use Answer Choices to Avoid Long Work

Suppose:

17% of 240

Estimate:

20% of 240 = 48

The answer must be somewhat below 48.

Exact method:

10% = 24
5% = 12
2% = 4.8
Total = 40.8

If only one option is near 41, choose it without unnecessary decimal refinement.
