Why a Larger Screen Can Help
The CCAT is fast and mixed. A phone may technically work while still being less comfortable for:
- visual matrices and figure sequences;
- long answer choices;
- tables or structured data;
- precise touch selection;
- rapid switching between question types;
- reviewing the full instruction and all options at once.
A laptop or desktop is often the safer choice when available and compatible.
When a Phone or Tablet May Be Reasonable
A mobile device may be practical when:
- the event explicitly supports it;
- the screen is large enough for comfortable reading;
- the connection is stable;
- the battery is fully charged or connected to power;
- notifications and calls can be silenced;
- the browser is current;
- the candidate has already practised on the same device.
Do not assume that successful practice on a phone proves the official event will display identically.
Browser and Connection Requirements
Criteria’s candidate guidance emphasises:
- a stable internet connection;
- JavaScript enabled;
- cookies enabled;
- a current browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge;
- event-specific compatibility instructions.
Avoid:
- private or restricted browser modes that block cookies;
- unstable public Wi-Fi;
- low battery;
- active operating-system updates;
- background downloads;
- screen overlays or accessibility tools not approved for the event;
- switching repeatedly between apps.

Notifications, Calls and Interruptions
Before starting:
- enable a focus or do-not-disturb mode;
- silence calls and messaging notifications;
- close unnecessary applications;
- disable automatic screen locking;
- connect to power where possible;
- tell others not to interrupt;
- preserve the invitation and Event ID privately.
An interruption does not automatically pause the test timer.
Screen Rotation and Zoom
Do not depend on rotating the device or zooming as part of your solving strategy. The assessment interface may restrict orientation or respond differently from an ordinary webpage.
Use a comfortable supported orientation before starting. If the page is unreadable, stop before beginning the timed section and contact official support.
Changing Device Mid-Test
Avoid changing device or browser after starting unless Criteria support or the employer specifically instructs you to do so.
A mid-event change can create:
- session conflicts;
- loss of access;
- uncertainty about whether responses were saved;
- additional delays;
- duplicate-session warnings.
If a technical failure occurs, record the factual error message and contact the employer or official support using the Event ID.
Practice on the Intended Device
Complete at least one timed mixed practice set on the device you expect to use.
Check:
- whether all answer choices are visible;
- whether visual figures are clear;
- whether touch or mouse selection is accurate;
- whether the browser remains stable;
- whether notifications stay blocked;
- whether you can work for 15 minutes without interruption.
A practice score is not an official result. The purpose is to test your setup and pacing.
