CCAT Raw Score: Correct Answers Out of 50 Explained
The CCAT raw score is the number of questions answered correctly out of 50.
Examples:
24 correct answers = raw score 24
31 correct answers = raw score 31
40 correct answers = raw score 40
The raw score is not:
- the number of questions viewed;
- the number attempted;
- the final question reached;
- percentage correct;
- percentile;
- an automatic pass or failure.
Criteria’s current public sample report illustrates a raw score of 24 and a percentile of 50. This is an official example, not a promise that every future score of 24 will always receive the identical percentile.

How the Raw Score Is Calculated
Give one point for every correct answer.
The standard CCAT has no additional wrong-answer deduction.
Example:
Questions attempted: 38
Correct answers: 27
Incorrect answers: 11
Raw score: 27
Do not calculate:
27 - 11 = 16
The incorrect answers do not subtract from the 27 correct answers.
Raw Score vs. Questions Attempted
Two candidates can attempt the same number and receive different raw scores.

Attempts create opportunities. Correct answers create the raw score.
Raw Score vs. Final Question Reached
A candidate can reach question 45 but answer 25 correctly.
Another can reach question 34 and answer 28 correctly.
The second candidate has the higher raw score.
Do not estimate performance from completion alone. Criteria states that less than 1% of candidates answer all 50 questions.
Raw Score vs. Percentage Correct
Use:
raw score ÷ 50 × 100
Examples:

Percentage correct is not percentile.
Raw Score vs. Accuracy
Accuracy uses attempts as the denominator.
Example:
24 correct ÷ 30 attempts = 80% accuracy
The same raw score of 24 can come from 30, 40, or 50 attempts. The preparation issue differs in each case.
Raw Score vs. Percentile
Criteria converts the official raw score into a percentile through its norming process.
You cannot calculate an official percentile by:
- multiplying the raw score by two;
- using percentage correct;
- assuming a linear conversion;
- using one independent practice table as permanent.

Is 24 the Average Raw Score?
Criteria reports a mean of 24.2 and median of 24 in its standardization sample. Candidate guidance describes approximately 24 correct answers as average.
This is not a universal passing score.

Can a Raw Score Be a Decimal?
An individual raw score is a whole number because it counts correct answers.
A group mean can contain a decimal, such as 24.2, because it averages many whole-number results.
Practice Raw Score vs. Official Raw Score
An independent test can also count correct answers out of 50.
That creates a practice raw score.
It is not automatically equivalent to an official result because the questions, difficulty, interface, and conditions can differ.
Use several unseen timed simulations rather than one repeated set.
How to Improve a Raw Score
Increase correct answers by addressing the largest loss:
- low attempts with high accuracy: improve pacing and recognition;
- high attempts with low accuracy: reduce careless errors and uncontrolled rushing;
- one weak category: use targeted drills;
- repeated time traps: guess sooner;
- repeated instruction errors: read the task word first;
- repeated questions: use unseen material.
