Criteria identifies software engineers and other technology workers among roles for which the CCAT has demonstrated predictive validity.
The CCAT does not test programming syntax, algorithms, data structures, system design or a specific technology stack. It measures general cognitive aptitude through Verbal Ability, Math and Logic, and Spatial Reasoning.

Why an Employer May Use the CCAT
Software work can require learning unfamiliar systems, reasoning through constraints, identifying patterns, interpreting specifications and making decisions with incomplete information.
The CCAT may provide a general aptitude signal related to these activities. It does not prove that a candidate can write production code, debug a distributed system or design a secure architecture.
What the CCAT Does Not Test
The standard CCAT does not directly assess:
- programming languages;
- algorithms or data structures;
- debugging skill;
- software architecture;
- databases or cloud platforms;
- version-control workflows;
- code quality;
- collaboration in an engineering team.

Ability Areas
Verbal Ability
Relevant preparation includes precise reading, analogies, sentence context and vocabulary. This can support fast interpretation of specifications, but it is not a technical-writing test.
Math and Logic
Practice calculator-free arithmetic, percentages, ratios, rates, number sequences, conditional logic and deductions. The CCAT does not test advanced computer science mathematics.
Spatial Reasoning
Practice figure sequences, matrices, rotations, reflections and combined visual rules. Spatial items can appear even when the role itself is not visually oriented.

What Is a Good Score?
There is no universal software-engineer passing score.
Criteria reports a general mean of 24.2 and median of 24 for its standardization sample. These are not software-engineer cutoffs.
An employer may use a suggested range, custom benchmark, comparative review or the CCAT as one factor among coding tests, interviews and experience.

Preparation Plan
- Confirm that the invitation names the CCAT.
- Complete an unseen timed baseline.
- Record attempts, accuracy, category errors and time traps.
- Correct weak methods without a timer.
- Add short category drills.
- Return to mixed timed sets.
- Complete full 50-question, 15-minute simulations.
- Review every error and guess.
- Prepare separately for coding and system-design stages.
Criteria states that there is no additional wrong-answer penalty. Use elimination and educated guessing when continued work is unlikely to produce a timely answer.
