CCAT Symbol Sequences: Repetition, Position and Transformation

Symbol-sequence questions ask you to identify how symbols, positions or visual properties change across a series.

They are useful spatial-reasoning preparation, but Criteria does not guarantee a fixed number of this narrow subtype in every live CCAT.

Official Context

The standard CCAT contains 50 questions in 15 minutes across Verbal Ability, Math and Logic, and Spatial Reasoning.

The test draws from a large item bank. Practice should therefore focus on recurring reasoning methods rather than one memorized sequence.

  1. Look for the shortest repeating group.
  2. Check odd and even positions separately.
  3. Track one feature at a time.

Alternating Positions

Separating odd and even positions often reveals two interwoven cycles.

Position Movement

A mark may move around the corners of a square:

top-left → top-right → bottom-right → bottom-left → ?

The movement is clockwise, so the next position returns to top-left.

Track position independently from shape or shading.

Rotation

An arrow may rotate by a constant amount:

↑ → ↓ ← ?

The arrow turns 90 degrees clockwise each step.

The next arrow is .

For more complex figures, choose a distinctive feature and track its orientation.

Shading Cycles

Example:

white → grey → black → white → grey → ?

The shading follows a three-step cycle.

The next state is black.

Count Changes

Example:

One symbol is added at each step. The next term contains five symbols.

Check whether count changes by addition, subtraction, doubling or alternation.

Symbol Substitution

A sequence may preserve structure while replacing one symbol:

One position changes at a time. The next step should change the second position while preserving the first, provided the same alternating rule continues.

Separate which position changes from what it changes into.

Combined Rules

Some questions combine two variables.

Example:

  • the symbol rotates 90 degrees clockwise;
  • shading alternates white and black.

Track these in separate notes:

orientation: up, right, down, left
shading: white, black, white, black

Only combine the two after confirming each pattern independently.

This order prioritises simple rules before complex ones.

Timed Strategy

The complete CCAT permits an average of about 18 seconds per question, although actual time should vary by difficulty.

For symbol sequences:

  • test the shortest cycle first;
  • use answer choices to eliminate impossible results;
  • avoid mentally replaying the entire sequence repeatedly;
  • make one concise note if needed;
  • guess and continue when the pattern remains uncertain.
