CCAT Accommodations: Adjustments, Extra Time, and Access
Candidates who need an accommodation or assessment adjustment should contact the employer, recruiter or authorized assessment administrator before beginning the scored event.
Criteria’s current terms state that the customer administering the assessment is responsible for legally required accommodations. Criteria can support the employer with available platform options, but an independent preparation website cannot approve or activate an adjustment.

Key Accommodation Principles
| Question | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Who decides? | The employer or authorized assessment administrator |
| Who activates the event setup? | The administering organization, with Criteria support where applicable |
| Is extra time automatic? | No |
| Is one adjustment suitable for everyone? | No |
| When should you ask? | Before starting, as early as reasonably possible |
| Where should documentation be sent? | Through the employer’s secure process |
| Can this website approve an accommodation? | No |
| Should you start before confirmation? | Avoid doing so where possible |
An accommodation should address a functional barrier without changing the purpose of the assessment more than necessary. The appropriate arrangement depends on the candidate, the assigned assessment, the role and the administering organization’s legal obligations.
Who Is Responsible?
Criteria’s Terms of Use, effective 23 July 2026, state that the customer-not Criteria-is responsible for making testing and video-interview accommodations required by applicable law.
The customer can contact Criteria about support available within the service, but responsibility for compliance remains with the customer.
For a candidate, the practical contact order is:
- employer or recruiter;
- authorized assessment administrator;
- Criteria candidate support for platform or access questions when directed;
- an appropriate professional or adviser when documentation or legal guidance is needed.
Do not send medical records, diagnostic details, Event IDs or private employer correspondence to CCATPracticeTest.com.
What Can an Accommodation Address?
Possible barriers can involve:
- reading or viewing small content;
- color, contrast or visual presentation;
- keyboard, mouse or touch-screen operation;
- screen-reader or magnification needs;
- processing timed written material;
- remaining in one posture;
- concentration or sensory demands;
- interacting with a game-based format;
- hearing audio where an assigned assessment uses it;
- understanding instructions in the approved assessment language.
Possible arrangements can include, depending on policy and compatibility:
- adjusted time;
- a compatible device or input method;
- supported display settings;
- assistive-technology support;
- approved breaks;
- a different assessment configuration;
- an alternative assessment selected by the employer;
- another individually approved measure.
This list is illustrative. It is not a promise that any particular arrangement will be available or appropriate.
How to Request an Accommodation
1. Contact the Employer Early
Send the request before opening or starting the scored event whenever possible.
A concise request can state:
I have been invited to complete the Criteria assessment for [role]. I need an assessment accommodation because [brief functional barrier]. Could you please confirm the secure process for requesting and approving an appropriate adjustment before I begin?
You do not need to send unnecessary sensitive detail in an initial ordinary email. Follow the employer’s secure documentation process.
2. Describe the Functional Barrier
Explain the assessment task that creates difficulty rather than trying to prescribe one universal solution.
For example:
- difficulty reading small or dense visual content;
- difficulty operating a standard mouse accurately;
- a need for screen-reader-compatible content;
- a disability-related barrier created by strict timing;
- a need for approved breaks or an alternative input method.
3. Follow the Documentation Process
The employer may request documentation under its policy or applicable law. Submit it only through the authorized channel.
Do not upload or email sensitive information to an independent practice provider.
4. Wait for Written Confirmation
Confirm:
- the assessment name;
- the total time;
- whether tutorial time is affected;
- whether breaks are permitted;
- the device and browser requirements;
- whether assistive technology has been tested;
- whether the Event ID reflects the approved setup;
- whom to contact if the adjustment is missing.
Do not assume that a verbal discussion has changed the live event.
Extra Time
Extra time may be one possible arrangement, but it is not automatic and no universal percentage applies to every candidate.
An approved time adjustment can depend on:
- the functional barrier;
- the assessment construct;
- the employer’s process;
- available platform configuration;
- applicable law and supporting documentation.
Before starting, confirm the actual displayed or communicated duration. Do not rely on a practice-test timer as evidence that the official event has been adjusted.
Alternative Criteria Assessments
The CCAT includes verbal content and strict time pressure. Criteria also offers other cognitive assessments, including language-independent and adaptive products.
An employer may decide that another assessment or configuration is more appropriate. The candidate cannot independently replace the CCAT with the UCAT, Cognify, CTRS or another test.
Read the Criteria tests comparison and CCAT vs. UCAT guide for general differences only. The employer controls the assigned event.
Screen Readers and Assistive Technology
Compatibility differs by assessment and item type.
Do not assume that every question works identically with:
- a screen reader;
- browser zoom;
- magnification software;
- high-contrast settings;
- keyboard-only navigation;
- speech input;
- touch-screen alternatives.
Criteria describes newer products such as CTRS as including screen-reader-compatible items in selected areas, but that does not establish universal compatibility for every CCAT item.
Ask the employer to confirm the supported setup and, where possible, test non-secure instructions or practice screens before the scored event.
Device and Input Adjustments
A compatible laptop or desktop may offer a clearer experience than a phone for dense visual content, but device choice must follow the live compatibility notice.
An approved arrangement may involve:
- a larger screen;
- a different pointer or keyboard;
- an accessibility feature;
- another compatible device;
- authorized assistance for an untimed administrative step.
Another person should not answer or interpret scored questions unless the official arrangement expressly authorises a defined form of assistance.
Read the CCAT mobile-device guide and browser-requirements guide.
Language and Translation
The standard CCAT includes verbal ability and is currently listed in US and UK English.
Candidates should not use translation software, dictionaries, AI tools or another person during the live assessment unless expressly authorized.
When language dependence creates a relevant barrier, the employer may consider another approved assessment. The candidate should not change the event independently.
Read the CCAT language-options guide.
What to Do If the Adjustment Is Missing
Before starting, compare the confirmed arrangement with the event instructions.
When something appears incorrect:
- do not begin the timer where possible;
- take a factual note of the displayed duration or compatibility message;
- preserve the Event ID privately;
- contact the employer or authorized administrator;
- contact Criteria support for platform assistance when instructed;
- wait for authorized next steps.
Do not create a duplicate account or new event.
If the timer has already started, document the issue immediately and contact the employer. A missing adjustment does not automatically guarantee cancellation or a retake.
Use the CCAT retake guide and technical-problems guide.
Practice Under Approved Conditions
Once the arrangement is confirmed, practice in a way that reflects it without representing practice as an official accommodation.
Track:
Approved practice time:
Questions attempted:
Correct answers:
Accuracy:
Questions affected by the access barrier:
Device or assistive technology used:
Interruptions or setup problems:
Use both focused drills and full mixed simulations. Practice performance remains unofficial and cannot prove what an employer must approve.
Privacy and Security
Keep the following information private:
- medical documents;
- diagnosis information;
- employer correspondence;
- Event ID;
- assessment link;
- login credentials;
- approved-adjustment details that you do not wish to publish;
- live assessment content.
Use the employer’s secure process and Criteria’s authorized support channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get extra time on the CCAT?
Possibly, when the employer approves an appropriate accommodation. Extra time is not automatic and there is no universal amount.
Should I contact Criteria or the employer?
Start with the employer, recruiter or authorized assessment administrator. Criteria can assist with platform support, but the employer remains responsible for accommodation decisions and compliance.
Can I request an accommodation after completing the test?
You can report what happened, but an adjustment cannot be assumed to apply retroactively. Contact the employer promptly and ask for authorized next steps.
Can I choose the UCAT instead?
No. The employer selects the assessment. You can explain the barrier and request an appropriate review.
Does anxiety automatically qualify for extra time?
No automatic rule applies, and this website cannot diagnose a condition or determine eligibility. Use the employer’s accommodation process when a health-related functional barrier exists.
Can I use a screen reader?
Compatibility must be confirmed for the assigned assessment and event. Do not assume universal support across all item types.
Will requesting an accommodation harm my application?
This site cannot predict an employer’s response or provide legal advice. The administering organization must follow the laws and policies applicable to its recruitment process.
