CCAT for Managers: Skills, Scores, and Preparation

Employers may use the Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test when recruiting for managerial roles, but the CCAT is not a job-knowledge test.

The standard CCAT has 50 multiple-choice questions, a 15-minute limit, no calculator, and three ability areas: Verbal Ability, Math and Logic, and Spatial Reasoning.

Managerial work may involve learning quickly, comparing evidence, solving unfamiliar problems, prioritizing competing demands and making decisions from incomplete information.

That possible connection does not prove that every employer uses the CCAT, that every vacancy has the same benchmark, or that a strong result demonstrates every skill required for the role.

Why an Employer May Use the CCAT

Criteria describes the CCAT as a general cognitive-aptitude assessment for work requiring problem-solving and attention to detail. Possible connections for managerial roles include:

  • interpreting evidence from several sources
  • reasoning through priorities and constraints
  • learning unfamiliar processes
  • communicating a structured conclusion

These are aptitude connections, not direct demonstrations of workplace performance.

What the CCAT Does Not Measure

The standard CCAT does not directly measure:

  • leadership behavior
  • people management
  • commercial judgement
  • domain expertise
  • how decisions are implemented in practice

Prepare separately for every confirmed role-specific stage.

What to Practice

Verbal Ability

Practice precise word meaning, analogies, sentence context and instruction reading. Use the verbal guide and verbal practice.

Math and Logic

Practice calculator-free arithmetic, percentages, ratios, averages, rates, sequences, conditional rules and deductions. Use the math guide, mental-math guide and logic guide.

Spatial Reasoning

Practice figure sequences, matrices, rotations, reflections, movement, element counts and shading. A non-technical role can still receive spatial questions because the CCAT is not a narrow job simulation. Use the spatial guide and spatial practice.

Priority areas for management candidates may include:

  • balanced performance across all three ability areas
  • logic, ordering and evidence evaluation
  • numerical interpretation
  • pacing without over-investing in one problem

What Is a Good CCAT Score for Managers?

There is no universal passing score for managerial roles.

Criteria reports a general standardization-sample mean of 24.2 and a median of 24. These are not role-specific pass marks. Employers may use position-associated suggested ranges, custom benchmarks, comparative review, or no automatic cutoff.

Verify any claimed requirement against the vacancy, recruiter, invitation and employer documentation. Confirm whether a number is a raw score, percentile, suggested range or internal cutoff.

Read the passing-score guide, score-range guide and score-by-job guide.

Role Variations and Other Assessments

The label Managers can include:

  • first-line manager
  • operations manager
  • sales manager
  • technical manager
  • senior functional manager

The employer may also use:

  • leadership interviews
  • management case studies
  • in-tray or prioritisation exercises
  • personality assessments
  • presentations or assessment centres

Two employers can use different assessments for similarly named positions. A Criteria or HireSelect invitation does not by itself prove that the assigned test is the CCAT.

Preparation Plan

  1. Confirm that the invitation names the CCAT.
  2. Learn the 50-question, 15-minute, no-calculator format.
  3. Take an unseen timed baseline and record attempts, correct answers, accuracy, category errors, guesses and time traps.
  4. Correct methods before forcing speed.
  5. Progress from targeted drills to mixed timed sets and full simulations.
  6. Use educated guesses when continued work is unlikely to pay off.
  7. Review every error with the error-log guide.

An independent practice score is not an official Criteria raw score or percentile.

Timing and Test Day

Fifteen minutes equals an average of 18 seconds per question, but that is not a separate item timer. Criteria advises candidates to make an educated guess and move on when a problem is taking too long, and notes that fewer than 1% answer all 50.

The live interface determines whether you can skip, return or change an answer. Do not rely on an unconfirmed navigation feature.

Before starting, confirm the deadline and time zone, preserve the invitation and Event ID, use a supported browser, choose a stable connection, close unnecessary applications, remove unauthorized materials, request accommodations in advance, and follow the live instructions.

Use the time-management guide, test-day guide and technical-problems guide.
